McDonald’s India & RAI holds the first Industry Academia Symposium

Mumbai, 23rd December 2011 : McDonald’s India & RAI held the first Industry Academia Symposium to promote Education and dignity of labour in Retail industry in India.

McDonald’s India (Hardcastle Restaurants), leading food retail giant, tied up with Retailers Association of India (RAI) to establish and connect with Key decision makers to influence people to take up careers in Retail.

Retail is one of India’s most vital industries, it has been plagued by various issues the most crucial being the lack of qualified and skilled manpower. To address these concerns of the Retail industry in India, McDonald’s India in association with RAI hosted the ‘Industry- Academy Partnership’ Symposium in Mumbai on 23rd December 2011. The key objective of this symposium was to encourage Academia
to start building Retail as part of the overall curriculum & create awareness in their institutions as it being a ‘respectable’ & ‘lucrative’ industry. The symposium proved a great success and thus plans are in place of making this an annual property by McDonald’s India and RAI to reward education institutions and Retail companies in excellence in Skill Development of retail employees.

Prominent personalities from both sectors- Education and Retail presented their views and action plans at the symposium, on topics like how to bridge the skill gap in Retail sector in India, Innovation in skill building and enhancing the ‘employability quotient’ of students in India. Mr Amit Jatia, Chairman of Hardcastle Restaurants (McDonald’s India), B S Nagesh, Chairman of the Retailers Association of
India, Mr Gautam Roy, COO Future Sharp along with representatives from the Education institutions like Dr.Madhavi Pethe- Principal Dahanukar College, Anju Kapoor: Vice Principal National College were present at the event.

Commenting on this occasion Mr Amit Jatia, Vice Chairman, Hardcastle Restaurants (McDonald’s India) said “Retail industry is growing at an exponential rate and McDonald’s India being worldwide leaders in food retail want to take the first step towards eradicating issues such as lack of skilled labour and establish dignity of labour that plagues this growing industry. We are extremely elated with the
response and involvement we have received for this first symposium to promote education among in the Retail industry and we will continue to play our part in the advancement of the Retail industry in India”

Mr B S Nagesh, Chairman RAI said “RAI is very proud of this association with McDonald’s Indiaand we believe this initiative is a very positive step towards the growth and improvement of the overall Retail industry in India”.
