Mumbai 19th March 2015: On the occasion of Sparrow Day, Oberoi Mall in association with Nature Forever Society is conducting a series of activities to highlight the plight of sparrows and save them from extinction. This year’s theme for World Sparrow Day is “I Love Sparrow” awareness campaign kick starts at Oberoi Mall on Saturday-Sunday, March 21-22, 2015 from 12:00 noon onward.

The year-long awareness campaign will include the “I LOVE SPARROW” campaign where citizens will be able to express their love for sparrows by pledging to do simple things like providing water, nesting sites or tweeting for sparrows.

There are various reasons expressed by experts for the declining sparrow population; like lack of nesting sites, food, invasion of non-native plants in our backyards and increasing radiation. The fast developing urban concrete landscape coupled unfriendly urban architecture, rise in pollution levels have been some of the factors put forth for their rapid declining population.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Oan Dilawar from Nature Forever Society said, “Oberoi Mall is a conservation partner of Nature Forever Society and it’s valued support helps us to reach a wide spectrum of citizen’s without whom the conservation of sparrows would not be possible. Sparrows require humans to meet most of its ecological needs and we hope that this campaign brings the citizens closer to nature.”

Praising the efforts and work done by Nature Forever Society, Mr. Nirzar Jain, VP - Oberoi Mall said, “We are privileged to be the conservation partner of Nature Forever Society and offer our platform to reach out to citizens of Mumbai. This should is a joint endeavor to create greater awareness and provide succor to these unfortunate birds.”

“Citizen Participation is the key in conservation of sparrows; without which this campaign will not be successful. We at Oberoi Mall hope to be facilitators in this campaign and call upon the citizens of Mumbai to extend their wholehearted support in making this drive a success”, added Mr. Jain.

Part of this awareness campaign would include ‘Sparrow Man’ which will be part of the activities where Mumbaikars will be asked to “Spot the Sparrow Man” and take photos & selfies with him.

At Oberoi Mall, citizens will also be able to Adopt Nest boxes and Bird Feeders which will help in creating vital habitat for sparrows. This campaign will have a long lasting impact and help in saving our sparrow from extinction.
