What is Karva Chauth ?

On this festive day married Hindu women fast from Sunrise to moonrise for the safety & longevity of their husbands. Karva (Diya) Chauth (Fourth) is on the 4th day after Poornamashi ( the full moon ). On the day of the fast women awake early to eat just before sunrise. The fast begins at dawn and the women await the rising moon. The fast is broken with the woman offering water to the moon by looking at its reflection in water through a sieve with her husband nearby. The husband then gives his wife her first sip of water from the thali and feeds her the first morsel of the day to break the fast.
