There are few things in life that are as fulfilling as watching a canvas come to life. The mélange of colors, forms and shapes come together to magically portray an artist’s vision; which is why perhaps art finds such a diverse audience and is a unifying thread on several occasions. High Street Phoenix dedicates the March edition of their monthly property ‘Talent Tuesday’ to the celebration of art. The premier destination centre collaborates with Visual Disobedience, a community of artists spanning varied fields whose sole aim is to take art out of the galleries and onto the streets, to offer Mumbaikars a day of interesting art dekko on the 26th March, 2 pm onwards at the Courtyard.
Visual Disobedience brings their enviable repertoire of artists to display some of their best works at the Courtyard along with a session of interactive workshops where patrons can learn the art of painting T-shirts. Artist Jai Ranjit will be spearheading these sessions where mall visitors will be provided with T-shirts, paints and brushes, for them to unleash their hidden painter. One could also get one’s old T-shirts and paint them, thus getting a chance to recycle clothes that probably haven’t seen the face of daylight in years. This could also be a fabulous do-it-yourself gifting opportunity. It is easy to pick up something from a retail outlet, but take this opportunity to paint a T-shirt for your friends, family and loved ones and see them smile.
On display will be a collection of artworks from Rahul Inamdar, Amrita Bagchi, Aparna Jayakumar and Janine Shroff, part of Visual Disobedience’s eclectic roster of artists. So join High Street Phoenix & Visual Disobedience this 26th March to offer some beauty amidst the concrete landscape of Mumbai.
About the artists:
Jai Ranjit-
The human mind has always been an enigma to Jai Ranjit. His paintings are reactions to philosophies that have evolved over centuries. Questions of structure, religion, art and connections between the heart and mind are explored through his paintings. A self- taught artist hailing from Mumbai, Jai is constantly on an experimental path, trying to understand styles and combinations that might better explain a concept, emotion or notion. Apart from painting, Jai also paints murals, T-shirts & shoes.
Rahul Inamdar-
Rahul Inamdar resigned from his corporate career to work as a full-time artist. Currently, he works out of his studio at Dosti Acres, Wadala. His preferred medium is oil on canvas, and experiments with ink and charcoal. He is a self-trained artist and works on abstraction of human and connectable, interpretative forms. Currently working on evolving dimensions, media and techniques to capture and transmit the emotions, energy and restlessness within. Have been painting since 2008, have exhibited a couple of times: The Creator Series, Space, Godrej Industries, 2010. Mural at Pop-up Museum of memories, Vikhroli, 2012.
Amrita Bagchi-
A multi-faceted artist, Amrita Bagchi is as comfortable designing sets for Naseeruddin Shah as she is painting murals. The NID grad works as a graphic designer and also directs videos and shot for Channel V, Bindass and various live events.
Aparna Jayakumar-
Aparna Jayakumar is a photographer based in Mumbai. She does documentary, editorial and commercial work. She studied Photography and Art History at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts in Italy and Greece, and has been exhibited in various cities like Mumbai, Delhi, New York, Rome, Budapest, Bratislava and Paros (Greece). But sometimes she likes to draw things just for a laugh.

About Visual Disobedience:
Visual Disobedience is about creating the Bohemian space where daring, inspired ideas find a home. From graffiti artists to photographers, short filmmakers to animation artists, the idea is for the artists to find a cosy, roosting spot for cutting-edge collaborations, an inspired exchange of ideas, a portfolio for discerning clients with money and taste (yes, though rare, they’re not mythical) and more than a passing flirtation with coolth.
